Like a Time Lord!

So yesterday a co-worker and I were in the kitchen I was cleaning up as there was only an hour left, and he was putting away his peanut butter (amusing but unimportant detail alert). He looked down at his wrist, which lacked a watch, and asked if I knew what time it was. I looked down at my wrist, which I never wear a watch anymore ‘cuz I usually use my phone to check the time, and laughed as I had the same problem.  We were walking out of the kitchen and I said it feels like 4:10, ‘cuz I just looked at the clock on computer and it was almost 4:00. He checked a clock, and said I was dead on. I know it’s a silly thing to be proud of, but it pleased me that I got my sense of time back after losing it for about ten years, due to insomnia. It’s such a simple thing, to have a body clock, but finally I feel like mine is back on track. Makes me feel like a Time Lord or something. No I don’t have a TARDIS, but it’s still good to be in touch with the rest of the world.

In high school I had insomnia (which actually is why I started writing) and also worked retail, which I did though college. Now, the thing with retail, if you haven’t experienced first hand – is the hours are all over the place. Especially when I had two jobs, I’d often close one and open the other (my manager at Starbucks called this Clopen). When your mind is all over the place like that, it’s easy to get out of sync. But finally this year, ten years later, I feel almost normal. The benifits of having a internal body clock is the mornings I think. I think what really helped kick it in gear, was before my parents sold their house back in June, I had about three-four weeks of commuting an hour and a half away from work. So I had to wake up at 5:00 every day. And if you have to wake up that early, I pity you. I’m really NOT a morning person. Never have been. I’m a night owl ever since a kid. Even now, I’m typing this at 10:00 on Tuesday, so I lied that yesterday (when you read this, when I publish) is really today. Anyway, not to get on a confusing track off, I’m not a morning person. But having to do it for a while, helped kick me to at least be mentally awake to drive and do a little bit of work. Usually around 9 or 10 in the morning is when I feel fully “awake”.

Anyway, not sure what the point of this post was. It just really made me happy the time that “feels” is finally the right time. Anyone else know what I’m talking about? Or am I a complete nutter for getting so excited that I can “feel” time again?

Cheers,

Claire

  1. I completely understand the triumph you felt when you’d correctly “sensed” the time. To some, it is a small victory, but to anyone who has suffered from insomnia, it is HUGE! I understand, trust me. I used to work in retail also, and endured oddball hours and a disrupted sleep cycle. It was awful. I’m so glad your internal clock is back on track! 🙂

    • Aww thanks so much Jenny! Retail does do a number to the body doesn’t it? Shoppers don’t understand. They see the retail drones and think what an easy job it is. Truth is they just make it look easy 🙂 Hope your clock is back too! Yeah it’s been getting even better now.

  2. Understand this perfectly – Earlier today, after running around an adventure park, we all looked at each other and said ‘What’s the time?’ My answer – ‘I’d put it at 10 minutes to four’. I was only five minutes out! How the heck can this innate gut feeling tell the time so accurately? Happens quite a lot too…..:P
